A group of 30 women participating in the Heritage Walk from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi camped in Masdar City last night. Held under the patronage of Sheikha Shaikha bint Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan, the 140 kilometre trek pays tribute to UAE history, when Emirati families regularly made the trip from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi. The Heritage Walk culminates today in Al Bateen after the sixth and final night in Masdar City, one of the world’s most sustainable urban developments.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Heritage Walk trekkers after their long journey through the desert,” said Dr. Nawal Al Hosany, director of sustainability at Masdar. “Masdar has borrowed lessons from the past to pioneer a pedestrian-friendly “greenprint” for high-density cities that consume less energy and water than comparable urban areas and provide a high quality of life for future residents.”
The women commenced their journey on March 1, 2015 at Al Bada Resort and Hotel in Al Ain and averaged 25 km per day.
