Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, and MDC Business Management Services (BMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities to deliver projects that improve the energy and water efficiency of buildings and facilities in the UAE.

Masdar’s specialised sustainability capabilities will be combined with the facilities management expertise of BMS to help companies make their properties more efficient, thereby reducing operating costs. This combined offering will also support key elements of Abu Dhabi’s strategic vision, including the Abu Dhabi Plan, which focuses on ensuring the efficiency and sustainability of water and power supplies and improving demand management.

“There are tremendous opportunities for companies across the UAE to significantly reduce operational costs by making their buildings and facilities more energy and water efficient,” said Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer, Masdar. “We are delighted to bring together the vast experience and expertise of Masdar and BMS to meet the growing market demand for these services, while making a valuable contribution to the sustainability objectives of the UAE.”

“BMS will be able to offer even more compelling innovative and sustainable services and solutions for our clients as a result of this partnership with Masdar,” said Nasir Al Nabhani, Managing Director, BMS. “Linking our asset management and value engineering background with Masdar’s energy, waste and water conservation specialism, we will be able to offer a unique service that could generate substantial savings, provide optimised operational efficiency, international accreditation recognition, and achieve corporate social responsibility targets for our customers.”

Established in 2014 as a result of the Mubadala group’s continued growth as a global organisation, BMS provides standard and bespoke shared services solutions across technology, HR, finance, procurement and integrated facilities management. The BMS facilities management teams provide a comprehensive range of services including hard and soft services, security, property and office design & management.

Masdar’s Sustainability team provides consultancy services in a range of areas, covering sustainability strategy action plans, operational energy and water analysis and building efficiency audits that can lead to significant reductions in energy consumption and operational expenditures. Most recently, Masdar announced a partnership with Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy to deliver a Building Retrofit Training (BRT) Programme, a series of workshops to bridge the knowledge-gap in building efficiency among all stakeholders in the industry.

The IPIC Square complex will be the first project undertaken by Masdar and BMS, involving the development of an asset management system and the delivery of energy, water and waste benchmarking analysis. The aim will be to provide recommended no- or low-cost enhancement measures while exploring the viability of pursuing internationally recognised accreditation for the facility.
