The UAE is well-positioned to produce hydrogen sustainably, participants of the Sustainable Aviation Fuels Initiative for the United Arab Emirates (SAFI-UAE) webinar series heard.

Masdar, one of the supporting sponsors of the series organized by Khalifa University, participated in a session on “Regional constraints and opportunities for the production of sustainable aviation fuel”.

Dr. Faye Al Hersh, Technology Specialist and part of Masdar’s Strategy team, presented on Masdar’s experience in sustainable mobility, global initiatives promoting sustainable fuels, and possible solutions for low emission aviation.

Speaking on the readiness and capacity of the UAE to adopt more sustainable sources of fuel, Dr. Al Hersh explained that the UAE was strongly positioned to produce green hydrogen due to the low cost of its solar resources, the space it has available for infrastructure development and its existing infrastructure.

She also highlighted that as a politically stable, reliable partner to many offtake countries and companies in Europe and Asia, the UAE could potentially export sustainable fuel.

The SAFI-UAE Initiative launched with an eight-part webinar series, which explores relevant topics that will help to set the scene for a strong and vibrant SAF industry in the UAE.
